Who in the world is Steven Vornea?

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007 by admin

About 8:30 Wednesday night I found myself asking the question. Who is Steven Vornea and what should I write about him? So I clicked a thing or two and have found that there are two websites to tell you just who Steven Vornea is and one that just sounds like Steven Vornea. Now at this point you may be thinking ok so who is this Steve character already and why are you writing about him. Well to answer that. I was asked to write a thing or two about Steven Vornea and his websites so here we are.

With both the websites I have looked at I have to say that they are both welcoming at first look. There is about Steven Vornea that I looked at first then I found that I think steven-vornea.com is more inviting and easier to navigate. Neither site layout meets web standards for compliance but should not render to many user browsers useless. It could cause heavier load on their server and higher maintenance costs but I suppose that may be a good sign.

Nothing wrong with saying we got money because we are just that good I guess especially when you are in real estate. I am not personally in the market for their services but from what I see I would have to say if I was in the market I would be buying!

Be aware of poser dj’s

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007 by

We have been in the disk jockey and entertainment business for about 15 years now. We have maintained the same prices throughout the years. Although we are a lot more cost effective than others that are charging upwards of 3 times our fees just because they are affiliated with a media conglomerate that we will not mention but you all know whom I speak of. Those are not the ones that affect our business. Not even close even though you may expect them to. The ones that do are what we call posers. These are people who call themselves dj’s. Undercut us real entertainers by hundreds to thousands of dollars. Looks great to the customer at first because all they are worried about is saving a few bucks.

Well I am not saying you must spend a ton in order to get quality but you do get what you pay for. What totally kills me is this. These posers’s call me up to borrow my equipment. If I am lucky they ask to rent it. How many times do you think that has happened though? These guys talk themselves up and run the best of us down. Then they come to me to get the equipment to do the show they undercut you on. What a joke.

I have taken a stand against this type of thing. W no longer rent our equipment to these so-called disk jockeys. We refuse to make them look better while taking a hit on our own end. Now we will watch them fail and hopefully the customers see this and have a better idea of who to use next time.

Doll Makers and Avatars in forums and blogs

Tuesday, February 20th, 2007 by

We do not use avatars here at Asylum ET as a rule due to the drastic performance loss due to having every post with an image linking from who knows where or how slow the connection is that the image is hosted on. Aside from all that though the idea of avatar and doll images to express ones self along with their post is a great one to say the least. I have found a great site that allows you to make doll images to display in your myspace, forums or online pages. I spent about 20 minutes going through and creating a doll with Dress Up Games selecting various options.

The experience is what I would have expected from such a service. It is easily navigated. Due to the mass amount of image use that is expected from such a web site even my 16 MB connection had a bit of a time with image loads for each item to add but I have seen far, far worse so I would highly recommend using their service if you are into RPG’s, chats or anything else like that and want to add a little extra to spice things up. I was impressed with the fact that they allow you to save the image or link to it so my previous statement about performance loss is totally up to you and your hosting provider. The one thing I did not find but would hope to see in the future is male dolls in the doll maker. I think that could bring a larger group of users.

This is all free to do and if you want to have more they offer paid services as well so it is a win/win situation.

Here is the image we created at thedollpalace.com

And here are 2 images provided by thedollpalace.com.

So be sure to pop over there and check out what a great service they have to offer.

Coming Up

Monday, February 19th, 2007 by admin

There are a number of parties and bookings that have not been entered into the events calendar. Some of them are not entered due to not wanting to let the cat out of the bag but others we just have not yet had a chance to add them.

Meanwhile if there is a date in question feel free to check with us anyway. Never hurts to inquire. You may find that we had been holding a date for someone who is not going to be able to use it.

Upcoming Changes

Monday, February 19th, 2007 by admin

Asylum-ET will be upgrading our website over the next few weeks. We have been making a few choices as to whether or not to continue using the host we are on now. The price is semi fair. They offer mass amounts of bandwidth and storage but I am noticing that despite the fact they offer me 250 GB storage and 2500 GB bandwidth I see after I approach the first GB of traffic the site screeches to a halt. This is acceptable if the traffic were actually that high but we see an average of 500 – 1000 people a month so this is not merited at all. To top it I have experimented with running the site from our home office, which has not even a 10th of the connection. Reports from users as far away as Sweden state that the home office site loads much faster. With all this we have some decisions to make. Overall if the host we are currently using gives us some type of incentive such as a discount for staying with them then we may otherwise it is looking like we are in for a move. We will keep you posted, as we know more.

A few thoughts on Valentines Day

Monday, February 19th, 2007 by admin

Today I read an article about Valentines Day called Gifts for Valentine’s and all yearlong. You can check it out yourself by following this link BELISI on Valentine’s . I really appreciated this article because I feel far too many have lost site of what the holidays truly mean and what the point behind them is. Although it is nice to be able to say I love you with a six thousand dollar ring it is not practical, and means little more than Hun… I… uh… Hmm. I really don’t know you well enough to know what to give you as a real present so I went out and bought the most expensive thing I could find in hopes to make up for my lack of interest in you. Heh… Hope you like it.

Being that the idea behind giving a girl a box of chocolates is to give her many options because a woman likes to have many options. Right out of the box that is a bad idea and symbolizes nothing more than infidelity and a lack of ambition and imagination on your part. Maybe one would try something like waking that special someone up first thing in the morning to a fancy little bed in breakfast treat and a note that they can relax for the rest of the day because you called them off from work and will take care of the chores and kids for the day. “Careful calling her out of work fella’s” That may or may not be a good idea but you knowing your loved one you should know if this is a good idea or not. You may even want to try and extend this type of activity beyond holidays and you may be amazed with the results.

Blogs, UCC and the infamous Powered by.

Thursday, February 15th, 2007 by admin

This is a report of some of my recent findings in a bit of an experiment run through the Asylum ET web site’s blog. We have tried many different things to manage Unsolicited Commercial Comment traffic into our website. We choose to not allow the messages this traffic brings to display to our users. Often we find that the measures we have taken have failed, someone found a way around so we need to make counter measures.

This can cost hundreds and even thousands of dollars for a web site due to downtime from the unsolicited traffic, adding captchas that are typically an audio clip or an image that require a human to enter text for what was heard or seen. This is a great method at the moment because computers cannot easily understand and decipher what the text mixed with lines scratched through it could possibly say or what was in the audio recording.

Technology moves on though at a rapid pace so this too has its limitations. Being a programmer myself I know of some of these limitations but I am not going to get into that publicly for obvious reasons. I will say though that this is the type of knowledge you acquire from years of experience and belonging to and actively contributing to software communities help networks, support groups or any other related organizations.

One method of managing the UCC that cannot go without being commented on is joining a community that has libraries of message types and other key identifiers of this type of traffic. We use Akismet, which works for us very well in catching the inbound traffic. They have caught some things that I cannot even fathom why someone would want to post to our website or think that it would be allowed for that matter. Obviously we are dealing with a machine here ultimately that is sending mass amounts of UCC’s to websites but they get the web addresses of the blogs to attack from somewhere right?

That leads me to the infamous provided by links. Being a developer myself I add the provided by link to my projects and creations. Some choose to leave the links in place and others remove them. Most of my projects are licensed as GPL or LGPL so although for some of them it is a requirement that the coding can not be altered in any way the majority of it is fine to go ahead and remove a link back or anything like that because you are free to use, modify and distribute the code with some limitations described in the appropriate license agreement that came in with the project.

So now about this link back. Well we have added a provided by type of link back for the aforementioned and what we have found now is that the amount of inbound UCC traffic has increased so now you remember back when I mentioned that the addresses must come from somewhere right? Well how about that :( Well we have an idea now we are going to toy with. We will remove the link back from the main site and the only link back will be in this article with a nofollow attribute in hopes that the search engines honor that and do not index the link, which should eliminate doing any query on the address of our protector to get information about our site. The only thing at this point that could/should bring any results related to the aforementioned provider would be if we were to use their name again which as you see we have taken care not to and will never again mention even though we love them.

One final note is the use in any way of the word Simon, Pam, Adam, Nathan attracts unwanted things as well so you should refrain from use of this word. It is such a nasty word anyway :)

Recent developments and changes.

Monday, February 12th, 2007 by admin

Well it has been awhile since my last post so now to tell you all what I have been up to.

I have created a new link exchange feature for our site that you can check out by going to the bottom of the links page and clicking Link Exchange.

We have also added a new event calendar that you can use to see if an event is already booked and if not you can click a date and request it to be reserved. You can also look through past and upcoming events. Please keep in mind that we do not have complete records of our shows and bookings in the event calander. We were only able to enter a few of our past events but anything we do in the future is sure to be found here.

The shopping cart is functional but still not complete as of yet.
